Special Educational Needs
Within the Jefferys Education Partnership, we believe that:
- All children are valued and included regardless of needs or abilities.
- All children are entitled to a broad, balanced and enriching curriculum which is adapted as appropriate to meet individual needs.
- All our teachers are teachers of children with special educational needs.
- All our children can learn and make progress.
- Effective assessment and provision for children with SEND will be secured in partnership with parent/carers, children, LA and other partners.
- Maintaining children’s safety and wellbeing is central to their development.

Inclusive learning
All the teachers at Upper Shirley High are teachers of children with additional needs. The Inclusive Learning department provides support and a stable and nurturing environment in which we aim to maximise the learning potential of students who may face a whole ranges of difficulties and challenges.
These include those who have a statement of special educational needs (SEN); who have been identified as being in need of additional support; and those who have English as an additional language (EAL). We provide a holistic approach to meet the needs of all children by adopting a variety of strategies and liaising closely with a number of agencies. All our support staff have a specialism, whether this is in Speech, Language and Communication, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Emotional and Social difficulties, Physical impairment, EAL and Numeracy and Literacy catch up. They are skilled professionals who teach to their strengths and identify a number of different interventions to help students achieve.
The Inclusive Learning team links closely with the Heads of Year, Guidance Team Leader, Attendance Officer, Life Coach and the Careers Adviser. Together we aim to provide an inclusive education to ensure no child is left behind.
The Local Offer is outlined on the website which sets out, in very clear terms, what parents and students can expect from Upper Shirley High if a student has additional needs. This document aims to answer some possible questions and has been put together in consultation with parents, carers and students. There are also some resources to help support children at home such as; subject specific spellings, writing frames, stimulus for creative writing and useful websites for literacy, numeracy and much more! There are also websites connected to students with specific needs such as Dyslexia and Autism.
