To know who you are as a photographer: every student has the skills to take ownership of their creative journey, widening their aspirations to achieve critical acclaim.

Key Stage Three

In Year 9, students are introduced to both the technical and creative side of Photography through exploration of work by contemporary and historical photographers, as well as first-hand experience with our range of cameras and equipment.

This allows students to express themselves through a breadth of visual language; students learn about a variety of photographic media, techniques and processes, which include hands-on experimentation with both traditional and digital media.

Key Stage Four

During Key Stage Four, students will be taught to look at our visual world in an innovative way. Building on the confidence and technical skills developed in Year 9, students develop their creative potential which enables them to apply imaginative, analytical and critical thinking.

Students can focus on an area of Photography that inspires them whether that is portraiture, still life, documentary, digital or manually manipulated photography.

GCSE assessment is a Non – Examination Assessment (NEA) which is product of work produced in Year 10 and 11.

Unit 1: 60% of total mark - A portfolio of work; themes are set by the teacher, but the students are encouraged to produce a personal response.

Unit 2: 40% of total mark - An externally set project over a ten-week period which culminates in a ten-hour examination, during which the students produce a final piece of work.

Both units are marked by the teacher and moderated by AQA - https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/art-and-design/gcse/art-and-design-8201/specification/subject-content/photography

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We offer trips to the local area during Year 9, Southampton common being a favourite, where students take photographs. In addition, we offer a trip to London to visit galleries and take photos of iconic sites in central London.

The Photography department is open for GCSE coursework improvement sessions after school throughout the year.
