Students understand that languages will give them the tools they need to become global citizens by further developing their understanding of the world and respect for others. Students develop interpersonal skills such as communication and empathy, giving them more opportunities to succeed in the future. Languages open doors.

Key Stage Three

In Year 7–9, students will study one language (either French or Spanish). The MFL curriculum is carefully sequenced around the use of phonics, vocabulary and grammar, with the aim of developing students’ linguistic ability and enabling them to become confident language learners. Students are tested on all four skills, listening, reading, writing and speaking. 




Key Stage Four

Year 10 Specification

Year 10 students are following the new 2026 MFL curriculum with Edexcel. This is a new curriculum designed to be more accessible and relevant for students. The aim of this curriculum is to enable students to be able to communicate across 6 different thematic contexts which are meaningful and engaging. The GCSE is assessed in through 4 exams: Speaking (25%), Reading (25%), Writing (25%), and Listening (25%).

Year 11 Specification

Year 11 students are following the 2016 MFL specification with Edexcel. This curriculum covers five themes and students will be confident with vocabulary for each theme. Grammar is taught across all themes so that students can confidently adapt the language. The GCSE is assessed in through 4 exams: Speaking (25%), Reading (25%), Writing (25%), and Listening (25%).
