All students will emotionally respond to moving images, appraise filmmaking craft and connect with the world from an empowered position.

Key Stage Three

In Y9, students will learn the language of Film. They will explore the key elements that make up a film, which include cinematography, mise en scene and sound, developing the skills to both comment on the effects of those choices and use them in their own projects. Students will also explore genre in greater depth, looking at case studies of different films and identifying how genre is presented throughout both narrative choices, visuals and other key elements.

Key Stage Four

During Key Stage Four, students will be following the Eduqas GCSE Film Studies course in which they will study six key films in greater depth.

They will develop an understanding of:

The context of both time periods and locations in which the films are set and filmed;

The choices of key elements (cinematography, sound, mise en scene and editing) made by the director throughout the film to present moments and characters in certain ways;

The industrial factors of technological developments that can be seen throughout each different decade of film.

This will be assessed across 2 exam papers, both 35% each

Students will undertake a project for their NEA (30% of the total course grade) in which they will:

Write their own genre sequence and either write it up as a detailed screenplay or make it as a short film (20%)

Write an evaluation of this project, analysing the impact of their own choices (10%)
