This Tech Award complements the learning in GCSE programmes such as GCSE Design and Technology by teaching additional and specific skills in design for construction as well as practical skills in carpentry and joinery. It allows for more applied study when looking at the different types of technologies used in a real-world setting for low-rise construction. On completion of this course, learners could go directly into a trainee or apprenticeship role or progress to technician-level qualifications.

The content of this award introduces topics covered in more depth in the BTEC National and the new T Level, giving learners a head-start at Level 3. This is a two year course that is offered for students that are interested in developing skills within the construction industry. This course helps lay the foundation for basic concepts, skills and theory around the built environment.

Key Stage Three

This Btec is only offered to students in KS4. Although Design and Technology is not required as experience to qualify for this course, it is highly recommended.

Key Stage Four

This course is offered through Pearson as a formal qualification that is recognised by future employers, colleges and FETs. Students will sit a formal GCSE exam during the June exam.

This course consists of 3 components:

Component 1: Construction technology This component will develop knowledge and understanding of processes, terminology and technology used in the construction of the built environment. Theoretical component that is externally marked by Pearson.

Component 2: Construction in practice This component will introduce learners to commonly used hand tools, equipment and craft skills needed in the creation of the built environment and how to select and use materials in order to safely produce quality outcomes. Practical component that is marked internally but moderated by Pearson.

Component 3: Construction and design Learners will gain an understanding of clients’ needs and develop skills in responding to building design briefs and sketches that consider construction constraints. Theoretical component that is marked internally and moderated by Pearson. A set assignment has to be completed.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Students take part in various activities coordinated by other departments where practical experience is gained. E.g. Developing and building features for the school garden. Building hedgehog houses, bird houses, plant beds and decorative displays for the Learning support garden project.

We will visit local colleges and do trips to construction-related events.
