Citizenship gives students an insight into the structure of modern-day Britain and its place in the world. Through building political literacy and global awareness, students learn how to use their voice and actions to make effective and long-lasting change.

Key Stage Three

Citizenship is a subject offered to students from Year 9. In Y9, students will complete case studies focused on the Rwandan Genocide and Apartheid in South Africa, through this they will look at Human Rights and how the world tackles international crisis and immigration.

In addition, students will begin to look at the legal system through how we deal with youth offenders and how British political system works. This allows students to build the foundations in Politics, Law and Economics.

Key Stage Four

During Key Stage Four, students will follow the OCR GCSE syllabus. Case studies in Key Stage Four include the political system in North Korea, the fight for equal pay and how the media influences people in the UK.

Other topics covered include the legal system, with a focus on the courtroom, the role of the Government in decision-making and how the UK uses money.

The course is examined through three exam papers, one multiple choice paper (25%) a source-based paper (25%) and a campaign-based paper (50%).

Students who take Citizenship will develop an understanding of the world around them, they will also learn how to make a difference through campaigning and advocacy, and they will understand how the Government works and how decisions are made.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

All students will work in a group to create a campaign to make a positive change in the community and we host a marketplace for year 10s to share their campaigns.

We arrange for speakers to come and talk to the students such as representatives from the police, local Government and relevant agencies.
