World Mental Health Day - 10th October 2019

Last Thursday we were invited to take a small group students along to a World Mental Health Day event at Cantell School.  The afternoon was designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and to provide students with the knowledge of where to go for support and also equip them with coping strategies.

When we arrived at Cantell we visited an information fayre with stands from CAMHS, Simon Says, Prince’s Trust, No Limits, Board in the City, Yellow Door, Solent Mind and many others.  Students were able to take part in the activities at the stalls and collect an array of useful information.  Afterwards, students went to a short workshop and spent time working on such things as: discovering their strengths, dealing with bereavement, managing emotions, staying safe online, recognising okay and not okay relationships and some sports therapy with the Saints Foundation.

The students were chosen by their Heads of Year and will hopefully do some work in the near future to share their learning with others.

All of the students represented the school extremely well and were engaged and open to learning new things – well done!

Charlie Walker Visit

On Tuesday 15th October, Charlie Walker visited USH to deliver another brilliant inspirational talk to our year 7 students, on his recent expedition to Papa New Guinea. The students actively listened to a 45-minute presentation, where Charlie described his trip from start to finish. They found many of his encounters extremely interesting and were super keen to ask him many questions at the end.

We are pleased that Charlie wanted to return to USH again this year and hope he will come back again next year!

Reporting Absence, Appointments and Sickness During the School Day

If your child is unable to come to school, please contact the school before 09.00 to inform us of this. You can phone Alison Small (Attendance Officer) directly on 023 80522721 (there is a voicemail option), or email her at Alison.Small@ushschool.org

If you phone the main switchboard there is an option to select ‘report an absence’ from the menu. Please phone every morning that your child is not attending. We cannot assume that they are unwell on any given day because they were ill the day before. Truancy call will be sent out every day to all parents whose children are not in school, unless the parent has informed us of their child’s absence.

If your child has an appointment during the school day, please inform Mrs Small prior to the appointment. We must have an email, or telephone call from parents before we allow a child to leave site. Again, this is to ensure the safety of your child.

In the event of your child feeling ill during the school day, please discuss with them the procedures they need to follow. They must go to the Medical Room, where they will be assessed by a trained member of staff. If the child needs to go home, you will be contacted by the member of staff.

Please discourage your child from texting/calling you during the day and asking to go home because they are feeling unwell, or upset. They should go to the Medical Room; not only to be assessed, but so that staff are aware of their location.
