Message from Mr Woods

Hello

A short Newsletter this fortnight as we wish you a very Happy Easter.  I'd like to thank parents for your support of USH this term and I hope you have a wonderful holiday.  School holidays remain a special time for many families and I hope whether staying at home or venturing out, you enjoy the experience.

Kind regards

Stuart Woods

Y8 Paris Trip - October 2016

We have received a huge response to proposed visit to Paris in October.  Over 70 students have shown an interest and we are now in the process of sourcing accommodation and transport for the trip.

We will write to those who have expressed an interest after Easter with the final cost of the visit and details of how and when to pay along with passport information.

We will be holding a meeting for all parents in the Summer Term, hopefully before Half Term.  We will be able to give you more details about the itinerary and the visit at that meeting.

If you have any queries about the trip, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Science update

Colourful Chemistry

Fifteen Y10 students attended the Colourful Chemistry Conference at Southampton University on Wednesday 23rd March.  Students were treated to some explosive and colourful chemistry demonstrations and some insight into campus life and a future in chemistry.  Everyone had an enjoyable and informative afternoon.

Year 11 Revision Sessions

Revision sessions for Science will be on Friday 8th April from 9am until 1.30pm.  Sessions will take place in the English Corridor.  All Year 11s are expected to attend.  Period 6 sessions start after the Easter Holidays.  These will be every Friday in your normal Science room.

Rocky

Rocky the chameleon is a hungry chap and, in an effort to save some efforts and initiate another Science Club project, we have been attempting to breed his favourite food...locusts!  We have been trying since January but we've been unsuccessful.  Eggs are being laid by the locusts but none have hatched so far.  We would LOVE to hear from anyone who has been successful in breeding locusts to give us some hints and tips for this to work!

Overall Cross Country results

Well done for the collective effort of all the runners across the school who have represented us at any point this year!  The results reflect your dedication and commitment.

Southampton Youth Forum

We were delighted to be invited to another Southampton Youth Forum on Monday 14th March.  Five pupils from Upper Shirley High took part in the Forum where, along with students from other Southampton schools, they discussed a number of issues surrounding Health and Wellbeing.  The Youth Forum is an excellent way for pupils to network with students from other schools, a chance to put their heads together and come up with ways of improving and developing Education in Southampton.  Pupils contributed some excellent ideas on how we can promote healthy eating, mental health awareness (as a subject) and general student wellbeing within our school systems.  We hope that their ideas come to fruition in the near future!

Football Success

As the school football season reaches its close, I am pleased to report that, as it stands, several year groups are still fighting for success!  The Year 8 and Year 10 teams have made it through to the City Finals which take place during the week of the 18th April.  The Year 11s played their semi-final on Wednesday against Oasis Mayfield and won the fixture 5-1, so they are also through to the finals.

In the Leagues, the Year 8 and Year 10 sides look as if they have secured at least a top two finish (final tables are yet to be confirmed), so we are looking forward to finding out the results when they come through.

Mr Hall and Mr Staples would like to thank all the boys who have represented the school in football teams this year and wish everyone who is playing in the finals the best of luck.

After Easter, the PE Department look forward to starting our summer extra-curricular clubs and fixtures.  Poster and notices are already up in the changing rooms and a full list of summer clubs is available on the School website.

Netball League & Cup Tournament

We concluded the Netball League on 22nd March with a  Cup Tournament.  The girls did really well and we look forward to the Rounders League that starts after Easter.  The results from last night were:

U12 Team: 3rd in the Cup
U13 Team: Runners up in the Cup

Overall, our U12 Team came 4th in the League and our U13 Team came 3rd in the League.

Well done girls!

Have we got your contact details?

If you have recently changed number or email address, or if you have moved, we would be really grateful if you could let us know!  Our Examinations Officer will be sending out text messages to Year 11 parents about exams very soon and we want to be 100% sure that we have your correct details.  Many thanks!
